The Uganda High Commission in Ottawa recently hosted a consultative meeting in Toronto to gather feedback from the Ugandan diaspora regarding the development of a new Diaspora Support Policy. The initiative aims to enhance the role of citizens living abroad in national development, trade, and investment while addressing specific challenges faced by the community.
Led by Ambassador Allan Kajik, Chargé d’Affaires of the Uganda High Commission, the event included representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was organized in partnership with Global Events Canada. Policy consultant Dr. Abubaker Mohammad Moki and Dickson Ogwang of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs facilitated the discussions.
During the session, participants explored ways to streamline investment and trade processes for Ugandans living in Canada. Attendees also proposed mechanisms to assist those interested in returning to, settling in, or retiring in Uganda. Additional topics of concern included the nationality status of children and grandchildren born abroad, as well as improved access to information from the home country.
The meeting also addressed Uganda’s 10-Fold Growth Strategy, focusing on how diaspora expertise, technology transfer, and capital investment can support national development targets. Ambassador Kajik emphasized the importance of leveraging the skills and networks of the diaspora to foster economic transformation.
The event concluded with a commitment to maintain ongoing communication between the High Commission and the Ugandan community in Canada. Officials stated that these structured engagements are intended to ensure that the perspectives of the diaspora are integrated into future government policies.
