UFU calls for greater priority for local food in school procurement

The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) is calling for a shift in public sector procurement policy to prioritize locally produced food in schools, hospitals, and other public institutions. Deputy President Glenn Cuddy stated that recent discussions regarding chicken served in Northern Ireland schools should serve as a catalyst for a broader conversation about supporting domestic farmers.

Following clarification from the Education Authority regarding the sourcing of chicken products, Mr. Cuddy emphasized that the union does not intend to engage in debates concerning religious certification or faith-based dietary requirements. Instead, he argued that the focus should remain on how government bodies can better support local food producers through their purchasing practices.

Mr. Cuddy highlighted that Northern Ireland farmers adhere to high standards regarding food quality, animal welfare, traceability, and sustainability. He suggested that at a time when food security and supply chain resilience are critical, public procurement should be utilized to bolster local economies and farming families.

The UFU has long advocated for placing domestic producers at the center of food policy, noting that public procurement processes should provide greater recognition to food provenance and sustainability. According to the union, utilizing local produce in school meals offers an opportunity to educate students about food production and strengthen the connection between consumers and the agricultural sector.

Mr. Cuddy stated that the union intends to work with government departments, the Education Authority, and the wider agri-food industry to explore methods for increasing the volume of local food reaching public sector kitchens. He concluded that prioritizing local sourcing would provide economic, social, and environmental benefits for taxpayers, pupils, and the farming community.
