On February 28, 2026, a dramatic escalation of tensions occurred as the U.S. and Israel launched a coordinated military offensive against Iran. The major combat operation was a response to Tehran’s nuclear and missile programs and targeted military and leadership sites across Iran, including areas around the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. During this strike, a girls’ elementary school in Minab, southern Iran, was hit resulting in the loss of at least 40 lives, many of whom were children. The strikes were intended to degrade Iran’s military and nuclear capabilities, which the U.S. and its allies claim pose a direct threat to global security. Following the attacks, Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory and U.S. military installations in the Gulf. The escalating conflict led to numerous nations closing their airspace and suspending air travel, while international bodies called for independent investigations into the high number of child casualties.
