Two Trinidad Men Get 14-Year Sentence for 2018 Neighbour Murder

Anthony Ramsumair and Vion Ramjit, two men from south Trinidad, have been sentenced to 14 years in prison for the 2018 murder of their neighbour, Latchman Ramcharan. Ramcharan died from blunt force trauma to the head near his home. A local resident witnessed the brutal attack and subsequently heard the men confess, which led to their arrest.

Both defendants were teenagers at the time of the crime. Ramsumair, who was 17, pleaded guilty to murder, thereby sidestepping the death penalty. Ramjit, then 19, pleaded guilty to felony murder, asserting that the killing took place during a premeditated robbery.

Presiding Justice Nalini Singh initially proposed a 25-year sentence. However, she decided to reduce this term by four years for each man, considering their age at the time of the crime, their rehabilitation, personal circumstances, and good behavior while in custody. They also received a one-third reduction for their guilty pleas.

After accounting for the time served on remand, both men are expected to be released in under six years. Justice Singh emphasized that the sentences were proportionate and in line with legal guidance, adequately reflecting the severity of the crime, the roles of the offenders, and various mitigating factors.
