**Two Carmelite Sisters Attacked in South Sudan Ambush**

**JUBA** – Two Carmelite religious sisters, identified as Sr. Helen and Sr. Ansa, were attacked during an ambush while traveling from Torit to Juba on Sunday, August 30.

The sisters were returning from morning Mass when their vehicle was intercepted by armed individuals. According to reports from Radio Emmanuel 89, the assailants robbed the sisters and other passengers of their belongings. During the encounter, one of the attackers struck Sr. Helen on the head with the barrel of a firearm, resulting in an injury.

Preliminary reports also indicate that two children were abducted during the incident.

Following the attack, Bishop Emmanuel Bernardino Lowi Napeta coordinated assistance from Juba. The sisters are currently en route to the capital, where Sr. Helen is expected to receive further medical treatment.

This incident occurs on the same road where, on August 16, 2021, two members of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus—former Superior General Sr. Mary Daniel Abut and Sr. Regina Roba—were killed. The two sisters were ambushed while returning to Juba after attending the centenary celebrations of the Parish of the Assumption of Our Lady.
