A powerful storm has left Palm Bay, Florida, in a state of emergency, with two people dead and hundreds rescued since Sunday. The victims, Joshua Bennett, 34, and Archie Richards, 78, were among those swept away by the sudden flood waters, one of whom lost his life in a vehicle.
Flooding has not been confined to Palm Bay alone; neighboring St. Lucie, Martin, and Palm Beach counties have also reported rising waters. Meteorologists say a low‑pressure system over the Gulf forced a continuous onshore flow on Sunday and Monday, creating the conditions for the widespread deluge.
Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina briefed state officials on the casualties and the number of rescues, while Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins toured the affected area. Collins met with families, thanked first responders, and highlighted the devastation of homes, especially for newcomers from Louisiana who had recently settled in the region.
State officials are working closely with local leaders to assess the full extent of damage. Emergency services remain on alert, monitoring conditions and continuing to provide assistance to those impacted by the storm.
