TTPS Clarifies Policy on Vehicle Wrecking

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has clarified its policy on the release of vehicles being hooked up to wreckers. If the driver or person in control of the vehicle appears before it has been removed from its parking spot, the vehicle must be released. This comes after a video circulated in December showing a woman unsuccessfully begging officers to release her car as it was about to be towed. The TTPS emphasized that the law requires officers to release the vehicle when the owner appears before it is removed. It also explained that wrecking is not intended as punishment but as an enforcement measure to ensure compliance with traffic regulations. Wrecking operations are conducted at the TTPS impound yard between 9 am and 5 pm and motorists must pay a $500 release fee and a $200 per day storage fee for vehicles left overnight.
