T&TEC’s SPARK Initiative Ignites Student Interest in Energy Careers

The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) has launched the SPARK Initiative—School Partnership for Awareness, Responsibility & Knowledge—aimed at engaging secondary school students with modern electricity systems and career opportunities in the energy sector. The program was unveiled at Naparima College in San Fernando, marking T&TEC’s 80th anniversary.

The initiative introduces students to interactive learning sessions covering electrical literacy, energy conservation, and safety awareness. Students have the opportunity to explore career pathways in emerging technologies such as renewable energy, drones, and artificial intelligence. During the launch, participants engaged in hands-on activities like GIS mapping and drone demonstrations, which illustrated how technology integrates with modern electricity operations.

Minister of Public Utilities Clyde Elder praised the program, expressing optimism about the future contributions of “bright, young minds” in the energy landscape. Michael Dowlath, the Minister of Education, also lauded students’ participation, highlighting the national potential and responsibility demonstrated by the youth.

T&TEC Chairman Anil Kamal emphasized the Commission’s expanded role beyond electricity supply, focusing on empowering future leaders in energy innovation and sustainability. Career development formed a fundamental part of the initiative, offering sessions in résumé writing and interview preparation to ready students for the workforce.

Students from various South Trinidad schools, including Iere High School and Parvati Girls’ Hindu College, participated in this initial leg of the SPARK program. They shared positive feedback, appreciating the clarity and understanding provided by the practical demonstrations. With plans to expand nationwide, the SPARK Initiative aims to cultivate a generation informed and ready to lead in the energy sector.
