A 21-year-old woman, held in connection with the kidnapping of Valsayn resident Jankie Satie Karim, has been given a deadline by High Court Judge Karen Reid to be charged or released by the T&T Police Service (TTPS) by 4 pm today. The decision was made following a habeas corpus writ brought by the woman’s lawyers. The lawyers argue that the woman’s continued detention, without an interview despite promises, amounts to infinite detention and is unlawful. They suggest she could be allowed to return home and rearrested if sufficient evidence is found. TTPS legal officer Chinara Harewood requested reasonable time for investigators to complete their probe, citing other ongoing investigations. The woman will be immediately freed if the deadline is not met.
