Trinidadian Driver Fined $200K for Drunk Driving in Guyana

A 45-year-old Trinidadian man, Christopher Maharaj, residing at Red Road Plantation, East Bank Demerara, was hit with a hefty fine for drunk driving in Guyana. The charge was brought by Inspector Jadunandan after Maharaj was found driving a motor lorry, GAJ 8982, under the influence of alcohol.

The case was presented before the Diamond/Grove Magistrate’s Court on Monday, March 23, 2026. Maharaj, faced with the charges, admitted his guilt. The court, taking into account his admission, decided to impose a substantial penalty.

The court slammed him with a whopping $200,000 fine. However, it wasn’t without an alternative. The court laid out a provision that if the fine is not settled, Maharaj will face three months of imprisonment.

This decision sends a strong message about the severity of driving under the influence and the commitment of the Guyanese judicial system to uphold the law and protect public safety.
