The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation (TUCO) has announced the postponement of its annual general meeting (AGM), which was originally scheduled for September 27. The decision was made due to insufficient attendance to meet the quorum requirements necessary for the meeting to proceed.

According to TUCO Public Relations Officer Rondell Donawa, the organisation’s constitution requires the presence of one-third of its financial members to conduct the meeting. This requirement translates to approximately 130 members. However, only around 100 members attended the meeting, which took place at the Queen’s Park Savannah’s VIP Lounge in Port of Spain. This attendance included all 13 executives of the organisation.

Donawa explained that while the constitution allows for a postponement after one hour without a quorum, the general council chose to wait for two hours before officially adjourning the meeting around 11 am. He highlighted the significance of having a quorum to address various pressing issues and to provide reports to the membership. He stated, “Due to the nature of the circumstances around which the meeting was called, we needed to have the quorum to proceed.”

The agenda for the postponed meeting included several important items, such as the treasurer’s report for the 2024-25 fiscal year, zonal reports, the annual budget, and a draft of the constitution. Additionally, general business matters were also set to be discussed.

Concerns have been raised by members regarding the organisation’s operations and financial management. Some members have alleged that executives received $100,000 each to abstain from participating in the National Calypso Monarch competition, which has sparked discussions about the governance of the organisation.

A new date for the AGM has not yet been determined. The general council must first convene to propose a new date for the meeting. Following this, there will be a 21-day notice period for members to ensure they are informed of the new meeting date.

The postponement of the AGM highlights ongoing challenges within TUCO, as the organisation navigates issues related to member engagement and governance. The need for a quorum underscores the importance of member participation in the decision-making processes of the organisation.

As TUCO prepares for the rescheduling of the AGM, it remains to be seen how the organisation will address the concerns raised by its members and what steps will be taken to enhance transparency and accountability in its operations.

Members are encouraged to stay informed about developments regarding the new date for the AGM and to participate actively in future meetings to ensure that their voices are heard within the organisation.
