A joint intelligence-led operation has successfully intercepted a drone smuggling attempt at the Arouca Maximum Security Prison in Trinidad and Tobago. The operation took place between 7 PM on September 28 and 5:45 AM on September 29. According to a police media release issued on September 29, three suspects were apprehended approximately 50 meters from the prison wall.

Authorities seized a substantial quantity of contraband, which included narcotics, cigarettes, drone equipment, and communication devices. In addition to the items recovered outside the prison, further illicit materials were discovered during coordinated searches of several prison cells.

The operation was overseen by Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Suzette Martin, ASP Stanley, and Senior Superintendent of Prisons Lee Davis. The initiative involved multiple law enforcement units, including the Special Investigative Unit, Multi-Operational Police Section, Crime Scene Unit, and the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Specialist Units, among others.

This operation was prompted by credible intelligence regarding the aerial delivery of prohibited items via drone, leading to a targeted operation in the vicinity of the prison and simultaneous actions at the residence of a known offender. A vehicle suspected to be connected to the smuggling attempt was also impounded under Section 12 of the Emergency Powers Regulations 2025.

The operation underscores the significance of intelligence-sharing and collaboration among various law enforcement agencies in addressing emerging threats.

As investigations proceed, officials are expected to analyze the recovered materials and gather further evidence to support ongoing efforts to combat smuggling and other illicit activities. The operation serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by correctional facilities in maintaining security and the continuous need for vigilance against innovative smuggling methods.

In light of this incident, law enforcement agencies are likely to review and enhance their operational strategies to prevent similar attempts in the future. The successful execution of this operation may also lead to increased scrutiny of drone activities in the vicinity of correctional facilities across the country.
