This report covers trinidad tobago: coast guard with key details and context.

The leadership of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force has seen a notable transition with the appointment of Captain Don Polo from the Coast Guard as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). This change was enacted following a recommendation from the government to President Christine Kangaloo, who holds the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Captain Polo’s appointment was officially formalized on October 7, 2023, and he received his instrument of appointment from the President the following day.

Captain Polo takes over from Air Vice Marshal Darryl Daniel, whose contract was originally set to expire in March 2026 but was terminated prior to its completion. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the decision to revoke Daniel’s appointment was made after consultations between Defence Minister Wayne Sturge and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. While the Ministry expressed appreciation for Daniel’s service, there appears to be a discrepancy regarding the duration of his tenure, as he served as CDS for approximately six years rather than the eight years previously stated.

This leadership change occurs amid a state of emergency and increased military tensions in the region, particularly related to US naval operations aimed at combating drug trafficking in the Caribbean. Captain Polo has been acknowledged for his dedication to maritime security and previously held the position of leader of the Coast Guard, where he was promoted to captain in August 2020. His leadership is anticipated to steer the Defence Force in its mission to safeguard national sovereignty.

The Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force encompasses several branches, including the Regiment, Coast Guard, Air Guard, and Defence Force Reserves, all of which play vital roles in ensuring national security and contributing to community development. The Chief of Defence Staff reports directly to the Minister of Defence and is also a member of the National Security Council.

As Captain Polo steps into his new role, the Defence Force is expected to continue its efforts in addressing various security challenges facing the nation. The appointment comes at a critical time when the region is experiencing heightened military activity and the need for effective leadership in the Defence Force is paramount.

In summary, Captain Don Polo’s ascension to the position of Chief of Defence Staff marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, with expectations for continued commitment to national security and operational effectiveness in the face of ongoing challenges.
