Trinidad and Tobago is remembering Hans Hanoomansingh, a prominent figure who passed away on July 5th, 2025. He left a significant mark on the nation’s cultural landscape and political scene.
Hanoomansingh achieved a notable milestone in 1966, becoming the youngest Member of Parliament at the time, representing Caroni East under the Democratic Labour Party. His journey into public service was rooted in his upbringing in Las Lomas and Cunupia, and further developed during his time at Presentation College.
Beyond politics, Hanoomansingh dedicated his life to broadcasting and cultural preservation. His respected voice graced the airwaves of Radio Trinidad and the National Broadcasting Service (NBS), where he consistently championed national pride and cultural integrity. A passionate advocate for Indian culture, he played a key role in the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC), notably serving as President and significantly contributing to the establishment of Divali Nagar as a national institution.
His contributions earned him the prestigious Humming Bird Gold Medal in 1990. Tributes have poured in, with Dr. Devant Maharaj describing him as a principled and fearless voice who played a crucial role in integrating Indo-Trinidadian traditions into the national dialogue. Hanoomansingh will be remembered not only for his political and cultural achievements but also for his humility and quiet strength.
