Trinidad Funeral Home Denies Connection to Cumuto Mass Grave Scandal; Police Investigate

The illegal burial of 56 bodies in a mass grave at the Cumuto Cemetery, including 50 infants and six adults, has led to the detainment of two men who claimed to be employees of K. Allen’s and Sons Funeral Home. However, the funeral home has issued a firm denial, distancing itself from the unfolding investigation and any alleged wrongdoing. The burial was intercepted by authorities on April 18th, 2026, with several bodies found to have identification tags still attached, and at least two showing signs of prior post-mortem examinations.

The T&T Funeral Services Co-operative Society, also known as the Friendly Society, has been identified as a key entity in the investigation. There are claims that the society had an arrangement with the North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) to dispose of unclaimed bodies after a certain period, including infants in cases where consent was granted. The legality of these procedures is now under investigation.

Adding to the complex circumstances of the case, the caretaker of the Cumuto Cemetery was reportedly unaware of the mass burial. Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro has ordered a high-level investigation, underscoring the need for all human remains to be treated with dignity and handled in accordance with the law.

The incident has sparked public outrage and led to intensified scrutiny over the systems governing the handling and disposal of human remains in Trinidad and Tobago. Specialised units, including the Homicide Bureau and Northern Division officers, are now spearheading the probe to uncover the full chain of responsibility and determine whether criminal charges will be laid.
