A 66‑year‑old truck driver was killed on the Audrey Jeffers Highway in Cocorite when a garbage truck collided with his vehicle. The fatal incident occurred at about 1:47 p.m. yesterday, amid heavy rain, after Lennox Sylvan’s truck stalled near the Cocorite Fishing Facility.
Sylvan had exited the cab, pulled the engine cover down, and climbed onto the engine to restart his truck. While he was working on the vehicle, a garbage truck traveling west slammed into the back of his truck, pinning him beneath the collapsed cabin. The impact propelled the truck across the lanes, over the median, into the eastbound lane, where it struck a parked Jeep Renegade before coming to rest.
The garbage truck’s driver was also seriously injured and was transported to St James Medical Complex, where he remains in stable but critical condition. No other vehicles were involved in the collision, and the wreck was towed to the St James Police Station after Sylvan’s son cleared his father’s belongings from the wreck.
Traffic on the westbound carriageway was heavily congested from the MovieTowne area to just beyond the fishing facility, with delays lasting about an hour. Police said the incident caused significant disruption to the highway’s flow.
Sylvan was a well‑known churchgoer and respected member of his community. The road fatality toll in Trinidad and Tobago dropped to 74 yesterday, compared with 102 for the corresponding period in 2025.
