Trinidad and Tobago’s Equal Law Enforcement: No Group Is Above the Law

In a recent statement, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Trinidad and Tobago’s political leader, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equal law enforcement. This comes in the wake of the Attorney General’s assertion that no individual or group, regardless of their social standing or designation, is above the laws of Trinidad and Tobago. The state, she insists, will uphold the rule of law fairly and consistently, with no special treatment or immunity based on wealth, status, or association.

This also applies to the one percent community – a diverse group of individuals from various ethnic backgrounds, who are not exempt from legal consequences. In her statement, Persad-Bissessar emphasized the state’s commitment to ensuring that the laws of the land apply equally to all.

In a significant move, the state has enlisted foreign assistance to track down billions of US dollars that have been sent out of the country over the past 20 years. There are allegations implicating current and former high-ranking officials of local banks in facilitating the sale of massive amounts of foreign currency to local businesses. These funds are reported to be linked to cartels and have been used for purchasing real estate holdings and businesses.

Moreover, Persad-Bissessar addressed the issue of drug trafficking, stating that billions of dollars’ worth of illegal drugs have passed through the country over the last 25 years. With the state now receiving international assistance to combat drug trafficking and money laundering, the government is determined to confront these issues head-on.

In conclusion, Persad-Bissessar reassured all law-abiding citizens that they have nothing to fear from the actions of US and local law enforcement agencies.
