Trinidad and Tobago Tightens Road Safety with Higher Fines

Revised traffic fines have gone into effect across Trinidad and Tobago as the government steps up its road safety enforcement. The higher penalties apply to various offences including speeding, dangerous overtaking, and failure to obey traffic signals among others. This move has sparked public debate with some viewing it as a flip-flop on previous stances by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. However, officials argue that it’s an enforcement of existing laws, not the introduction of new offences. The fines are intended to act as a deterrent to dangerous driving practices which contribute to traffic-related deaths and severe injuries. While public opinion is divided, authorities maintain that the ultimate goal is reducing fatalities and improving road discipline, urging motorists to adhere to the updated penalties and regulations.
