Trinidad and Tobago has taken a significant step forward in its environmental strategy by partnering with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to tackle the pressing issue of climate change. This new partnership was showcased during a tree-planting ceremony hosted by the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) to mark World Environment Day, underscoring the government’s commitment to positioning climate action at the forefront of national policies.
Addressing a diverse audience of students, diplomats, and environmental advocates, UNDP Resident Representative Ugo Blanco highlighted the critical waste management challenges facing the country. Blanco noted that Trinidad and Tobago produces more waste per capita than any other Caribbean nation, urging citizens to adopt more sustainable consumption habits. “If everyone in the world consumed at the levels seen in some societies today, there wouldn’t be enough resources on the planet,” he cautioned.
The partnership with the UNDP aims to bolster sustainability efforts and address issues of environmental degradation through increased community involvement. Residents are being invited to participate actively in local environmental initiatives, a call to action that merges national policy with grassroots engagement.
Diomedes Heraclio Carles Cleghorn, Ambassador of the Republic of Panama, also attended the event, sharing insights from Panama’s own environmental achievements. He emphasized the interconnectedness of economic progress and environmental stewardship, pointing out that more than half of Panama’s territory is covered by forests, making it one of the few carbon-negative countries worldwide.
The ceremony concluded with participants planting trees at the NCIC Nagar compound in Chaguanas, symbolizing a collective commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The event, which encourages a blend of cultural tradition with modern environmental science, marks a hopeful step towards a more sustainable future for Trinidad and Tobago.
