Trinidad and Tobago Opposes CARICOM Dictatorship

Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has voiced strong objection to dictatorship in the Caribbean, arguing that it’s hypocritical for regional leaders to advocate for democracy locally while ignoring authoritarianism overseas. Persad-Bissessar, during a regional forum, emphasized the need for every government head to be elected fairly and questioned why some CARICOM governments and political parties think they have the right to democratic elections while denying the same to Cuban citizens. She also criticized the inconsistency of promoting democracy and capitalism within the Caribbean Community while tolerating communism and dictatorship elsewhere. Persad-Bissessar underscored the need for humanitarian support for Cuba but condemned any political endorsement of its authoritarian government. Her comments have triggered a regional debate about CARICOM’s role in addressing governance issues among member states and balancing humanitarian efforts with political principles.
