Trinidad and Tobago Launches Relief Drive for Earthquake-Devastated Venezuela

Following one of the deadliest natural disasters to strike Venezuela in over a century, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago has launched a National Collection Drive. The initiative, beginning Monday, June 29, aims to gather humanitarian donations for the thousands of Venezuelan families displaced by the recent catastrophic earthquakes.

On June 24, two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, wreaked havoc in northern Venezuela, particularly in the coastal state of La Guaira and surrounding communities. The aftermath is heartrending, with hundreds of lives lost, thousands injured or missing, and entire communities struggling to access basic necessities due to widespread infrastructural damage.

In response, Trinidad and Tobago has mobilised a nationwide donation campaign. Citizens, businesses, community organisations, and faith-based groups are encouraged to contribute essential relief supplies. Collection points, operating through Municipal Corporations and other designated locations, will receive donations destined for affected Venezuelan communities.

The Government has urged the public to donate priority items such as non-perishable food, bottled water, infant supplies, hygiene products, medical items, blankets and other emergency essentials. It has also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting regional humanitarian efforts, while maintaining close communication with Venezuelan authorities.

As relief agencies warn of immense humanitarian needs due to aftershocks and damaged infrastructure, the international community has rallied, deploying search-and-rescue teams, medical personnel, and emergency supplies. Trinidad and Tobago, in this spirit of global solidarity, invites its citizens to support this initiative and aid one of its closest regional neighbours in an extraordinary time of need.
