Trinidad and Tobago are grappling with a crisis of police accountability following the release of a video showing police shooting at a car carrying Joshua Samaroo and his common-law wife, Kaia Sealy, on 20 January 2026. The incident left Samaroo paralysed and has led to warrants being issued for Sealy’s arrest. The public has been left with more questions than answers, especially as the number of police shootings has increased during the ongoing State of Emergency.
The Police Complaints Authority is currently investigating these incidents, but public concern continues to grow. The government’s proposal to introduce Zones of Special Operations, granting expanded policing powers to the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, has only added to these concerns. Despite the State of Emergency, hundreds have been detained without clear charges and violent crimes, including home invasions, continue to occur.
In response, the Opposition has called for strengthening of the Police Complaints Authority through legislative reform. They argue that the rights and privileges of citizens must be protected and guaranteed. However, the government has yet to clarify whether the State of Emergency will be extended or a new one implemented.
Meanwhile, allegations of corruption involving the Minister of Defence, Wayne Sturge, and alleged gang leader, Danny Guerra, remain unaddressed. Accusations of nepotism and corruption in relation to multibillion dollar award scandals also remain, placing further pressure on the Prime Minister to act.
