Trinidad and Tobago Enters State of Emergency Amid Security Operations

Trinidad and Tobago is under a State of Emergency (SoE) amid escalating security concerns, but no curfew will be imposed. Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher reassured citizens that daily life can continue as normal despite increased security operations nationwide. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has gained new authority to conduct warrantless searches on properties following the start of strategic operations.

In a significant development, several high-ranking gang leaders were moved from the Maximum Security Prison to undisclosed locations after the Commissioner’s recent prison visit. While the identities of these individuals remain undisclosed, they are now in facilities known for strict communication restrictions.

Concerns have arisen regarding potential collusion between certain national security members and gang elements within prisons, highlighting issues of internal integrity and oversight. The decision to declare the SoE was influenced by an intelligence report received yesterday, although details of the threats are not public. The recent kidnapping of Ms. Karim has been mentioned as a possible factor contributing to the heightened alert.

The government has not indicated when the State of Emergency will conclude, encouraging citizens to stay calm and alert as developments continue.
