The results of the recent local elections are a key indicator for Slovak political parties as they prepare for the upcoming parliamentary elections. While an increasing number of candidates run without a visible party affiliation, roughly half of them still declare allegiance to a specific party. Parties support candidates both individually and through various coalitions, sometimes forming complex alliances. The most significant shift compared to the previous election cycle was observed for the party Republika. Coalition partners backed Republika’s candidates in a range of formations, leading to a notable improvement in the party’s performance. Historically, cooperation with a party whose members have been linked to extremist remarks had been discouraged, but this stance appears to have evolved. The election coverage also includes detailed analyses of how many mayors and city councilors were elected for parties such as Smer and Hlas, the outcome of the costly contest for the Košice district, the city where progressives unseated a long‑term mayor, and a quantitative assessment of Republika’s gains relative to past results.
