TRHA rallies behind nurse following reported domestic violence incident

The Tobago Regional Health Authority has expressed concern and support for Registered Nurse Nicoya Bernard-Paul following a reported domestic violence incident that left her seriously injured in Tobago. In a media release issued on Thursday, October 1, the TRHA said Bernard-Paul has been a valued member of the organisation for 15 years and extended sympathy to her and her family as she receives medical care. The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, September 30, at Signal Hill. According to police information reported by the Trinidad Guardian, Bernard-Paul was allegedly attacked during an argument at her home and suffered injuries to her neck. She was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment. The Guardian reported on Thursday that she remained warded in stable condition. Other reports have indicated that she was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit. The TRHA did not provide details about her medical condition beyond stating that she had been seriously injured. The Authority said its thoughts and prayers were with Bernard-Paul and her relatives and expressed hope for her full and speedy recovery. TRHA also condemned violence and abuse, saying it remains committed to protecting the wellbeing, safety and welfare of its employees. The Authority appealed to members of the public and the media to respect Bernard-Paul’s privacy and that of her family during what it described as a challenging period. It also urged members of the public to exercise sensitivity when sharing information or commenting on the incident. Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
