Traffic warden injured in reckless airport drive-off incident sparks safety concerns

A traffic warden was injured during a reckless drive-off incident at Piarco International Airport on July 8, 2025. The incident unfolded when the warden was issuing a parking citation to a motorist who had violated airport traffic regulations. As the officer began to document the ticket, the driver unexpectedly accelerated, hitting the warden. Emergency medical personnel treated the officer at the scene before transporting them to the Arima Health Facility, where they are reported to be in stable condition, though the full extent of the injuries is still unknown.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) and Airports Authority security responded quickly, intercepting the suspect vehicle at the Piarco roundabout. Investigations are ongoing. Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Eli Zakour expressed his wishes for the officer’s quick recovery and reinforced the ministry’s commitment to airport safety. The Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago condemned the reckless act, reminding the public of the importance of respecting traffic regulations to safeguard lives. The TTPS has called on witnesses or anyone with information to assist in the investigation, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding the safety of traffic enforcement personnel across the country.
