Tour de France: A Month-Long Bubble Outside Reality, Says Team Assistant

The Tour de France is more than a bike race; it’s a month-long bubble that encloses riders, staff, and journalists in a whirlwind of speed, fatigue, and camaraderie. In a candid moment, an assistant from a French team described the experience as ‘artificial’ and not real life. ‘I love cycling and the Tour madly, and I return with great eagerness each year, but I know that real life is the daily grind,’ he said. From Chambéry to Voiron, the 17th stage exemplified this surreal world where participants lose track of time and space. The race is a ‘Grand Manège,’ a rollercoaster of sensations where pleasure and exhaustion go hand in hand. For one-twelfth of the year, everyone involved in the Tour steps out of their ordinary reality into a yellow, noisy, intoxicating whirlwind. But as the assistant reminded, this bubble is only temporary. ‘These daily troubles will arrive for all of us soon enough,’ he added.
