**Tooro Kingdom Faces Uncertainty Over Succession After King’s Death**
*Fort Portal, Uganda – September 1, 2026* – The Tooro Kingdom is confronting a succession dilemma following the death of King Oyo Kabamab Iguru Rukiidi IV, who died on Thursday in the United States while receiving medical treatment.
In a statement released by the kingdom’s prime minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomire, it was announced that the late king left behind a son who could be eligible to inherit the throne. President Yoweri Museveni corroborated the claim, saying that the Queen Mother had informed him of the child’s existence.
The announcement has been met with skepticism from some members of the royal establishment. Charles Kamurasi, the Omusunga (head) of the Tooro Royal Clan, expressed doubt about the existence of a son, noting that he had known King Oyo since childhood and was surprised by the claim. Kamurasi suggested that, should no clear heir be identified, succession should revert to the traditional lineage of Rukidi III.
To manage the transition, a 21‑member committee of elders from the Babiito clan has been formed. The committee is chaired by Musuga Charles Kamurasi and includes notable elders such as Dr. Isaac Mayombo, Fr. Dr. Charles Oyo, Dr. Kagoro Kaijamurubi, Job Karamagi, and Gilbert Mujogya. Its mandate is to oversee the traditional succession process and to plan the next steps for selecting a new ruler.
Kasaija Ernest Kusemerera, who oversees the Omukama’s local security (Omukumirizi), indicated that the kingdom’s priority is to ensure that any succession respects established customs and maintains stability within the monarchy.
Ritualist David Baguma added that, if the alleged son exists, his maternal grandfather must first present him to the Babiito clan elders. The elders would then perform specific traditional rituals to prepare the prospective heir before any formal succession procedures commence.
Baguma emphasized the need for calm during the period of uncertainty, assuring the public that the kingdom possesses clear protocols and structures to determine its next ruler, even if a direct heir does not emerge.
