Tony Blair Backs AI-Powered Public Service Reform in Ethiopia

Former British Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair has visited the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute (EAII), throwing his weight behind the country’s push to modernize public services through artificial intelligence. Blair, founder and chairman of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, described AI as a powerful tool for transforming government service delivery. ‘Artificial intelligence is modernizing public service delivery,’ Blair said during discussions with EAII leadership. He committed the Institute to working closely with EAII to support Ethiopia’s digital transformation and the deployment of AI-driven solutions. The talks focused on collaboration in AI innovation, institutional capacity building, and digital transformation across public services. EAII Director General Worku Gachena expressed appreciation for the Tony Blair Institute’s support, emphasizing the importance of international partnerships in advancing Ethiopia’s AI capabilities. ‘The Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute appreciates the contribution of the Tony Blair Institute in supporting Ethiopia’s digitalization journey,’ Worku said. The two institutions agreed to sustain and expand cooperation, with an emphasis on strengthening AI innovation and building technical capacity. The visit signals growing international interest in Ethiopia’s digital ambitions and the potential for AI to drive more efficient, citizen-centered public services.
