Toledo y el recuerdo de su primera entrevista como artista: así nació un vínculo de 25 años con ‘La Nación’

In 2001, Costa Rican singer‑songwriter Toledo first appeared in the pages of the national newspaper La Nación. The interview, titled “240 libras de pura calle,” coincided with the release of his debut album Mind Rupture, which he signed to Sony Music. The feature marked the beginning of a relationship that, 25 years later, remains active. Toledo has described the interview as a significant moment for him and his family. At the time, news stories were often kept as clippings, so the photograph and report became a special record. Since then, La Nación has covered various stages of his career, including new releases, image changes, and key moments in his artistic journey. The musician also values the newspaper’s coverage of non‑commercial cultural expressions. He recalled the coverage of the Rap Ticofest, where rap battles and gatherings drew fans to parks. “I think you are one of the newspapers that first reach the underground scene to publish it and then the rest follows,” Toledo said. He praised journalists who seek out cultural stories, arguing that such work brings attention to deserving initiatives. Toledo emphasized that journalism should prioritize quality over speed. “It’s better to put the truth and be second to publish it, but it must be true and based on facts,” he told La Nación on its 80th anniversary. He thanked the newspaper for its long‑standing support of his career and for its coverage of Costa Rican music in its many forms. During the newspaper’s 80‑year celebration, Toledo joined other Costa Rican artists—Debi Nova, Canina, Jorge Jiménez Deredia, Otto Apuy, María Torres, Sofía Chaverri, and Eddie Mora—in a series of conversations that were later posted on YouTube. The event highlighted the newspaper’s role in documenting the country’s cultural history.
