Tokyo Farmer Launches ‘Bushu Houboku Shamo’ Free-Range Chicken Brand After Decade of Passion

Akiruno City farmer Nobuaki Takeuchi, 56, has launched a new brand of free-range chicken called ‘Bushu Houboku Shamo’ after more than a decade of refining his farming methods. Takeuchi, who has been raising Shamo chickens for over 10 years, decided to adopt free-range practices after seeing the stress and aggression caused by conventional metal cage farming. He wanted to create an environment where chickens could thrive naturally.

Today, Takeuchi raises about 40 free-range chickens on his farm, which features a coop, fenced free-range area, and a spacious pasture. The chickens can move freely, and Takeuchi provides them with natural health supports such as oregano (for antibacterial properties) and garlic and ginger in their feed.

The brand’s first batch was sold to butchers and restaurants that share his philosophy. ‘I want to deliver the ideal chicken that I envision,’ Takeuchi said. ‘It makes me happy if people enjoy eating delicious chicken.’ His efforts highlight a growing trend toward humane and sustainable poultry farming in Japan.
