Tobago Political Parties Demand Transparency Over ‘Secret’ Radar

Political parties in Tobago are collectively voicing their concerns about a ‘secret’ military radar installation at the ANR Robinson International Airport. On December 10, leaders from three parties, the Innovative Democratic Alliance (IDA), People’s National Movement (PNM), and Class Action Reform Movement (CARM), held a press conference demanding transparency and safety amid geopolitical tension. The radar, identified as an AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR system by a US communications specialist, functions primarily as aerial surveillance. IDA’s leader, Denise Tsoiafatt Angus, expressed concern that the installation could make Tobago a prime target in the event of a war, due to its potential use as a missile interceptor that could monitor Venezuelan activities. She called on THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine and his team to clarify the situation. Other political leaders echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for information and transparency to assuage the fears of the island’s residents. The radar came into public attention after questions arose about a US military transport plane seen leaving the airport, which Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar initially claimed was there for roadworks assistance. She later acknowledged the radar’s installation, stating it was a national security issue.
