Tobago Jet Ski Operators Await Court Decision on Pigeon Point Restrictions

A court decision is anxiously awaited by jet ski operators in Tobago, as the fate of restrictions imposed at Pigeon Point hangs in the balance. These measures were put in place following the tragic death of seven-year-old Angelica Jogie, who was struck and killed by a jet ski on April 8. This incident spurred public concern and led the Tobago House of Assembly to pursue tighter controls on marine activities, including an emergency injunction that banned jet ski operations in key areas.

The injunction goes beyond a simple ban, however. It also restricts customer solicitation and the launching of watercraft in designated zones, disrupting business activity significantly in the sector. Operators say these measures have caused a sharp decline in both customers and revenue, leaving many uncertain about their future livelihoods.

While authorities argue that these restrictions are necessary for safety and regulatory purposes, business owners and tourism workers are calling for consultation and balance. They are in support of improved oversight but stress the need for a dialogue.

The wider tourism industry has also voiced concerns about the indirect impacts of these restrictions. They warn that if these restrictions continue, it could exacerbate financial hardships for families that depend on marine-based activities.
