Tobago Carnival to Limit Promotion of Trinibad Music Glorifying Gun Violence

In a proactive move aimed at enhancing public safety, Tobago Carnival promoters have agreed to restrict the promotion of Trinibad music that glorifies gun and gang violence during this year’s festival. This decision follows police recommendations as stakeholders prepare for the event scheduled from October 30 to November 1, 2026, with activities spanning the entire month.

The initiative, however, does not constitute a complete ban on Trinidadian music. Instead, it selectively targets songs with violent lyrical content. The focus is on ensuring a positive and secure atmosphere for festival-goers, as highlighted by the head of the Tobago Promoters Association, Kevon McKenna, who confirmed the group’s commitment to the police’s recommendations.

Responsibility for implementing this restriction will largely rest with individual event promoters. They will need to guide DJs on which songs should be omitted from playlists, aiming to prevent music that could potentially incite aggressive crowd behavior.

Support for the initiative extends beyond law enforcement. Soca Titans champion Verrse and Seventh-day Adventist pastor Clive Dottin have both endorsed the move, emphasizing the impact of music on listener behavior. This development occurs amid a broader regional conversation about the influence of Trinibad music and its links to public safety concerns.
