Curtis Williams, the Chairman of the Tobago Division of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, has issued a warning to the people of Tobago to remain vigilant as targeted criminals may attempt to flee from Trinidad, where a State of Emergency has been declared. In an interview with Guardian Media, Williams emphasized that Tobago could potentially serve as a refuge for these individuals escaping the heightened police activity in Trinidad, which he described as currently “hot right now.”
He highlighted a significant drop in crime on the island, noting a 72% decrease in murders in 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. This reduction in criminal activity, according to Williams, necessitates proactive measures from authorities to safeguard Tobago. He urged law enforcement to maintain a strong presence and called upon the public to remain calm and cooperative during this tense period.
Williams acknowledged the unusual circumstances faced by the residents of Tobago but reassured them that they have navigated similar situations in the past. He urged the community to stay informed and follow directives from law enforcement to ensure the safety of the island. “We just ask everyone to remain calm and let law enforcement do what they have to do to ensure that Tobago stays safe throughout this period,” he concluded.
As the situation evolves, it is crucial for all Tobagonians to stay alert and informed while supporting the efforts of law enforcement in maintaining peace and security on the island.
