The Election Commission of India has issued an order prohibiting two rival factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) from utilizing the party’s official name and election symbol during the upcoming assembly by-elections in West Bengal.
The decision follows an internal dispute within the party, which prompted the commission to intervene to prevent voter confusion. Under the terms of the directive, neither faction is permitted to campaign under the established TMC banner or display the party’s recognized symbol while the matter remains unresolved.
The Election Commission has mandated that both groups must select alternative names and symbols for the duration of the by-polls. This measure is intended to maintain the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that voters can distinguish between the competing candidates.
The by-elections are scheduled to proceed under these restrictions, with the commission expected to oversee compliance across the affected constituencies. Neither faction has yet announced their new temporary designations following the commission’s ruling.
