One year after its inauguration, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is reportedly exceeding its initial operational objectives. The project, which serves as a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s energy strategy, has achieved significant economic milestones since becoming functional.
However, the success of the dam has intensified long-standing geopolitical tensions with Egypt. Cairo has expressed ongoing concerns regarding the impact of Ethiopian infrastructure projects on the flow of the Nile River. Egyptian officials have signaled their intent to oppose further development projects proposed by Ethiopia along the river, citing potential threats to their national water security.
