The water treatment plant at Lakeview has not been operational

POINT FORTIN – Newly appointed Minister in the Ministry of Housing, Phillip Edward Alexander, has raised concerns about conditions at the Housing Development Corporation’s (HDC) Lakeview project in Point Fortin, claiming that raw sewage has been bypassing the treatment plant and flowing directly into the central dam around which the housing development was built.

According to Alexander, the water treatment plant at Lakeview has not been operational for years, leaving residents exposed to foul odors and potentially unsafe water conditions. He further claimed that the same dam supplies water to households, raising serious public health questions.

The allegations also raise issues of accountability. Under the former PNM administration, Marvin Gonzales, then Minister of Public Utilities, may have been aware of the situation, but it remains unclear why it was not addressed. Similarly, Penelope Beckles, who served as Minister of Housing, would also have had oversight during her tenure.

Now in office, Alexander says these longstanding concerns must be uncovered and properly dealt with. His claims have sparked fresh calls for answers as to why the problem was left unresolved and whether residents were adequately protected.

At present, the HDC and the relevant ministries have not publicly responded. The public is being urged to look out for further clarification and official statements as the matter develops.
