‘The game must go on’: Jamaican church elder skips Sunday service to watch World Cup final

For 64-year-old Caroline Bolton, the FIFA World Cup final was a priority that even Sunday service couldn’t overshadow. The lifelong Argentina supporter informed her bishop that she would not be in church, opting instead to watch Spain face Argentina at the Mayberry Investments Goal Rush Tailgate at Caymanas Park. ‘Mi done tell mi bishop from morning say I will not be in church,’ Bolton told THE STAR. Her bishop’s response was surprisingly laid-back: ‘He said, “Okay Sister Bolton”. Champs, football match, the game must go on. We are not one of the stuck-up ones.’ Dressed in Argentina’s iconic blue and white, Bolton watched with her daughter and grandson as Spain edged Argentina 1-0. Despite her team’s loss, she was gracious in defeat. ‘Spain play good ball today. Mi die-hearted Argentina, but you have to give justice where justice is due. Spain play good defence ball today,’ she said. Already planning for Argentina’s next outing, Bolton laughed as she said: ‘Mi ago try go home go wash mi shorts make it dry fi wear tomorrow. Win, lose or draw, Argentina.’
