Ted Cruz compara la derrota de las elecciones de medio mandato con escándalo de Watergate

Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, described the party’s loss in the state’s Senate race as a “Watergate‑level repudiation” during an episode of his podcast Verdict on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. He compared the defeat to the 1974 Watergate scandal that led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation and the subsequent electoral backlash against Republicans. Cruz said the result was “not just a blue wave, it was a blue tsunami” and called it a “real beating” for the GOP. He added that the loss reflected voters’ frustration with the party’s economic performance, citing rising costs of food, gasoline, diesel, insurance, tariffs and the ongoing war in Iran. The election saw Democratic state legislator James Talarico defeat Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, who had the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. Talarico, who has a record of anti‑corruption and populist economic policies, will take office in January and serve alongside Cruz, whose term ends in 2031. Cruz, who has represented Texas in the Senate since 2013, called Talarico to congratulate him on the victory. He noted that Republicans had held both Texas Senate seats since 1993. The midterm elections on Tuesday were a significant win for Democrats nationwide. The party gained a majority in the House of Representatives, holding 244 seats, and increased its Senate presence to 54 seats, pending the outcomes in Alaska and Mississippi. The results were seen as a rebuke of President Trump’s agenda.
