A mentally ill man, known as “Giant,” caused a disturbance along the Eastern Main Road in Tunapuna on July 30, 2025. The incident began around 6:45 a.m. when police received reports of a naked man near Pennywise Cosmetics, close to the local police station. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches and weighing approximately 400 pounds, Giant is a mental outpatient from the St. Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital.
Officers, including Sgt. Cassie and PC Hopkins, approached him near Republic Bank but found him agitated, frothing at the mouth, and speaking incoherently in an unknown language. Despite attempts to calm him and offering clothing, Giant refused and continued his violent behavior.
Support was requested from the North Central Division ERP and the NCTF East, but even the presence of his 29-year-old nephew could not control him. Eventually, officers deployed a taser, which successfully subdued him without causing harm to bystanders.
He was transported to the Mt. Hope Hospital for stabilization, where it was discovered that he was suffering from a serious leg infection. Following treatment, he is expected to be transferred to St. Ann’s Hospital. Fortunately, there were no injuries to the public or damage to property during the incident.
