Syria and Germany have taken a major step in bilateral relations by signing an agreement to establish a Joint Syrian-German Committee. The agreement, signed on Thursday in Damascus, aims to organise permanent cooperation based on mutual interests and respect.
The signing ceremony took place at Tishreen Palace, with Syria’s Director of International Cooperation Qutaiba Qadish and Germany’s State Secretary Geza Andreas von Geyr representing their respective countries. Shortly after, the committee held its inaugural session, co-chaired by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Shibani and the German State Secretary.
The committee will oversee the implementation of agreements in several key areas including economic recovery, reconstruction, investment, energy, transport, civil aviation, transitional justice, missing persons, and the refugee file. Senior officials and technical experts from both sides participated in discussions to expand cooperation.
This agreement is part of Syria’s broader strategy to strengthen institutional international partnerships and advance shared interests. The move signals Germany’s continued engagement in Syria’s post-conflict reconstruction and stabilisation efforts.
