Suspect Burned After Interfering With High-Voltage Equipment

An attempted act of vandalism at the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission’s (T&TEC) Brechin Castle substation caused a significant electrical disturbance on June 10, according to officials. A high-voltage breaker was tampered with, leading to a voltage dip that alarmed residents across parts of the nation. Fortunately, the protective mechanisms in place prevented what could have been widespread power outages.

The incident unfolded when an intruder gained unauthorized access to the substation and made contact with a 132-kilovolt breaker, resulting in a serious fault within the system. Security footage revealed that the perpetrator, after suffering an electric shock, managed to leave the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward. Authorities reported that the intruder, who sustained severe burns, was taken for medical treatment.

T&TEC issued a stern warning to the public, emphasizing the hazards associated with tampering with electrical infrastructure. “Interfering with our electricity network is not only illegal but extremely dangerous,” a T&TEC spokesperson said. The commission urged individuals with information relating to such vandalism to report it anonymously.

This incident highlights the ongoing risks and safety implications regarding the security of national electrical infrastructure. In light of these events, T&TEC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a reliable electricity service and assured the public that the stability of the grid remains unaffected.
