Supreme Court Dismisses Minister Arvin Boolell’s Suit Over 2021 Parliamentary Suspension

The Supreme Court of Mauritius has dismissed a constitutional redress claim filed by Dr Arvin Boolell, the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries. The case challenged a suspension imposed during a 2021 session of the National Assembly.

Boolell had brought the suit against former Speaker Sooroojdev Phokeer and the former Prime Minister, arguing that the suspension violated his rights. However, the court ruled against him, effectively ending the legal challenge.

The judgment carries significant political weight, given Boolell’s current cabinet position and the involvement of former high-ranking officials. It reaffirms the judiciary’s role in adjudicating disputes over parliamentary procedure.

Details of the court’s reasoning have not been fully disclosed, but the dismissal marks a definitive end to the matter. The case had drawn attention as a test of constitutional protections in parliamentary settings.
