On the afternoon of Saturday, 7 November 2023, a gunman opened fire in Kraków’s main square, the city’s most frequented tourist area. Six people were killed and 16 others were injured, including five foreign nationals and two police officers, one of whom was seriously wounded. The attacker, a 25‑year‑old man, was found to have held ultranationalist views. Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said that ongoing investigations indicate the suspect “had such views, and the motive remains under investigation.” He added that “everything points to the suspect being influenced by far‑right ideology, a matter that will also be the subject of the investigation.” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported that the suspect’s home contained the bodies of three people—two women and a man—who are believed to be members of his family. Police recovered firearms and a substantial amount of ammunition from the suspect’s vehicle. Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz described the incident as a terrorist act. In the aftermath, authorities declared two days of national mourning, covering Sunday and Monday, to honour the victims.
