Sulayman Chooses Namibia Over Gambia

Namibian-Gambian striker Sulayman Cham, also known as Hangero, has expressed his ambition to represent Namibia at the international level. Born in England to a Namibian mother and a Gambian father, the forward spent his early childhood in Namibia before returning to the United Kingdom.

Cham is currently playing for Redditch Borough FC in step 6 of the English football pyramid. He has recorded three goals and one assist so far this season, setting a personal goal of achieving more than 20 goal contributions. His recent performance included a key assist in a 2-1 away victory against Shortwood FC.

His football journey began at age 10 with Hempsted United, followed by stints at Netherton FC and a trial with Peterborough United. After the Covid-19 pandemic, he played for Godmanchester Rovers, Cradley Town, and Wednesfield FC before taking a hiatus for personal and family commitments. He has since returned to competitive football with Redditch Borough, where he plays as both a right-winger and a striker.

Reflecting on his development, Cham cited Brazilian legend Ronaldinho as a primary influence on his style of play, noting his admiration for the player’s creativity and freedom on the pitch. He also identified the tactical timing of pressing defenders as one of the most challenging aspects of his position.

Cham credits his family, particularly his sister and mother, for supporting his career. He noted that his mother’s experience building a life in the United Kingdom serves as a significant inspiration. While he continues to pursue a career as a professional footballer in England, he maintains a close interest in Namibian football and remains focused on his goal of playing for the national team.
