Stuart Young Calls for Security Ministers’ Resignation After Tragic Child Murder

Opposition Member of Parliament Stuart Young has called for the immediate resignation of Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander and Defence Minister Wayne Sturge, following the tragic murder of 23-month-old Akini Kafi in Belmont. The toddler became the latest victim of a violent shooting that also claimed the lives of two men, bringing the national homicide tally to 130 for the year. Young argues that the incident underscores the government’s inability to effectively tackle rising crime levels in Trinidad and Tobago. Speaking at a press conference, Young emphasized the need for strong leadership and effective crime-fighting strategies, criticizing current efforts as insufficient.

The call for resignations comes amid heightened public concern over security and safety, especially considering that Akini’s murder marks the third child fatality associated with crime in the country within the year. Young criticized the government for maintaining a ‘business-as-usual’ approach, pointing out that the State of Emergency in effect had not successfully curtailed such heinous acts. He asserted that the failure to protect the nation’s children should be an indicator of the need for a change in leadership to restore public confidence.

In response, government officials highlighted ongoing police investigations into the Belmont shooting and announced that a new anti-crime strategy is set to be unveiled soon. Foreign Affairs Minister Sean Sobers, addressing the media, stated that while emotions run high following crimes of such magnitude, the government remained committed to a comprehensive approach to public safety. Sobers indicated that upcoming measures would be more proactive and community-focused.

The murders in Belmont, a densely populated area where residents are now expressing fear for their safety, have reignited conversations about societal desensitization to violence. Laventille West MP Kareem Marcelle noted the broader implications this incident has for community safety, especially in vulnerable areas predominantly affected by crime. He urged his parliamentary colleagues and community leaders to focus on preventive measures that address the root causes of crime.

Alongside political discourse, faith leaders and criminologists have joined calls for urgent intervention and dialogue. They stress that community engagement, Stepped-up policing, and socio-economic support should work in tandem to curb the epidemic of violence affecting even the youngest members of society.
