Stray Bullet Victim Nathan Pierre Dies After Long Fight for Justice

Nathan Pierre, a 34-year-old man, succumbed last week at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital after a lengthy battle stemming from injuries sustained in a tragic incident nearly two and a half years ago. On December 17, 2021, Pierre was struck by a stray police bullet in the carpark of the Courts Mega Store while purchasing a television, an event that drastically altered the course of his life.

The bullet inflicted catastrophic damage, leaving Pierre paralyzed and requiring him to navigate life in a wheelchair. He faced numerous health challenges over the years, including chronic pain and severe medical complications. His common-law wife, Sherice Lawrence, shared that Pierre never fully recovered from the trauma, both physically and emotionally, as he awaited justice for the incident that changed everything.

At the time of the shooting, Pierre was one of four victims; two others, siblings Sinaya and Simeon Lessey, unfortunately lost their lives. Following the incident, police officer Sidney Roberts was charged with murder and wounding with intent, with the case set to proceed to trial in June.

In the months prior to his death, Pierre’s health declined significantly, leading to severe bedsores that became infected. Despite treatments, he eventually slipped into a coma and passed away shortly thereafter. His family expressed their devastation, not only mourning his loss but also questioning the slow pace of justice in the wake of such tragedy.
