“STATUS BY BIRTH, HISTORY AND PRESENT OF CASTE IN INDIA”

Caste System in India: A Look at its History and Present Status

The social stratification system in India is unique compared to other countries. The caste system, which has a significant influence on an individual’s life, is a socially constructed identity that is passed down from generation to generation. It is a status ascribed to every person at birth, differing from other forms of social stratification that arise from economic, occupational, and social inequality.

In India, a person’s caste determines their social, occupational, economic, cultural, political, and religious status. This can be understood as “Holistic Inequality,” where an individual’s caste affects every aspect of their life. Historically, people from lower castes have faced restrictions, such as being barred from reading scriptures, moving freely, or sitting with upper castes, and have been forced to live in segregated areas.

The origins of the caste system in India are rooted in Hinduism and its religious scriptures, according to B.R. Ambedkar. In his paper “Caste In India: Their Mechanism, Genesis and Development,” Ambedkar argued that the origin of caste is tied to endogamy. The distinction between varna and jati is also significant in understanding the caste system.

The caste system has evolved over time, adapting to changing social conditions and realities. Despite some formal stabilization, the social and political consensus on the caste system remains largely unchanged. This article aims to explore the history and present status of the caste system in India, tracing its development from its roots in Hinduism to its current form in independent India.
