*Colombo, Sri Lanka – August 28, 2026* – The first Test of India’s two‑match series against Sri Lanka ended in a draw at the Galle International Stadium, with both sides finishing on equal scores after the final innings.
India, batting first, posted 503 for 9 declared. Opening batsman Devdutt Padikkal scored 117 off 193 balls, while Dhruv Jurel made an unbeaten 115 off 177 balls. Contributions also came from Rishabh Pant (63) and captain Shubman Gill (50). Sri Lanka were bowled out for 290 in their first innings, with Sonal Dinusha scoring 103 and Pasindu Sooriyabandara adding 80. India’s spinners Manav Suthar and Prasidh Krishna each claimed three wickets.
Following on, Sri Lanka reached 429 for 9, thanks to a 112‑run partnership between Dinusha (133 not out) and Keshara Nuwantha (46). The match concluded with the scores level, and the teams shook hands after the final session.
In a post‑match video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), captain Shubman Gill said, “There were a lot of learnings in this series. It wasn’t the result we wanted, but Sri Lanka played well and we have to give them credit. Hopefully we have a good series in New Zealand.” Gill also praised Padikkal, who finished the series as India’s leading run‑scorer with 328 runs at an average of 109.33, including two centuries. He highlighted Suthar’s performance, noting the spinner’s 16 wickets at an average of 21.06 across the two Tests, with best figures of 6 for 55.
India’s victory in the first Test of the series (1‑0) improved their standing in the ICC World Test Championship, although their points percentage fell, leaving them fifth in the table ahead of the upcoming New Zealand Tests scheduled to begin on November 19, 2026.
The draw means the series will be decided in the second Test, which will be played in New Zealand later this year.
